The Worldview of the Maya

Our Mayan worldview is a way of life that is inspired and guided by the light of our ancestors.

Since time immemorial the origins of our ancient culture have been founded on the principles, values, and traditions of our Mayan way of life that grants us the privilege of inheriting the knowledge that seeds our identity and provides us with a cosmology all our own.

Our worldview is simply the way in which we perceive ourselves in relationship with the micro and macro cosmos – with the underworld and the world above; our cosmology also allows us to grow in respectful harmony within the infinite spiral of evolution and transcendental life.

Our ancestors were always concerned with deciphering the mysteries of life, striving to find a respectful way of living in relationship with the entire creation that surrounds us; this is because it is in our nature to ponder the whys and wherefores of our existence: Where do we come from? Who are we? And, where are we headed?

This is the reason why they observed the movement and the strength of the great spirit that sets our cosmos in orderly motion. They established points of reference that allowed them to develop the sacred calendars that grant us understanding of our place in the sacred oneness of everything that our eyes can appreciate.  Our sacred calendars provide synergy between our human behavior and the movements and energetic influence of the stars that orbit around us.

The sacred Cholq’ij, our ceremonial calendar, analyzes our human behavior and, at the same time, provides a natural explanation of our personality; it allows us to identify codes to decipher each human being in such a way that our virtues and weaknesses can be identified, giving us the opportunity to facilitate the conditions that will establish our balance and equilibrium so that our lives can develop fully.

According to Mayan wisdom, nothing in nature is expendable, and everything that exists has a reason for being. Each piece is part of the complementarities of the whole, and this is why all things must be respected and cared for – the mountains and the rivers and everything in nature. All that emerges from our Mother Earth is sacred; this is the essence that nourishes our physical as well as our spiritual needs. Caring for the health of the Earth is to care for our own health.

This message is offered, not in the spirit of contradiction, but to humbly invite members of the human race to reflect and consider our responsibility to life; because our generation is living in difficult times of violence, contamination, and human degradation where materialism and the law of consumerism motivate the accumulation of wealth at the expense of human lives; these passions strip humans of our humanity, and they are causing the abusive exploitation of natural resources that will never be replenished, and will cause disharmony and disequilibrium in our planet.

When our actions lead us astray, sooner or later we must face the consequences. This is why we must contemplate the sacred creation with humility and respect. Because nothing that exists in nature is the labor of the human hand.
